William Shannon “Augie” Covert
William Shannon “Augie” Covert, 54, died suddenly on Sept. 13, 2020. He leaves behind his wife Denise (Krakowski), son Christian and fiancee Zoe of Tampa, daughter Chandler and fiance Justin of South Carolina, and daughters Caroline and Claire of Melbourne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Carol Covert of Melbourne, his sister Kathleen Gallagher of Palm Bay and his son Corey Nolan of North Carolina.
William lived an extraordinary life that took him all around the country, making many friends along the way. He lived his life “for the story,” which he turned into a career as a freelance journalist for the Daytona Beach News-Journal where, among other things, he got paid to get free tattoos and found a home in the city and people of South Daytona. He rode choppers, met serial killers and rock stars, cherished Vivaldi and collected art of all kinds.
A voracious reader, a talented musician and a hilarious storyteller, William will be remembered by all who came in contact with him. No formal service is planned, but family asks that friends of his gather wherever they are, share their favorite stories of him and raise the drink of their choice in his honor. Because he loved babies so much (especially his six grandsons), in lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the March of Dimes, who saved his son’s life when he was born very premature.
