Andrew “Andy” Joseph Salaka, Jr., husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 24, 2024.
Andy led a remarkable life, serving his country for 20 years in the Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant; earning many commendations and awards for innovative improvements in his work in calibration. He then contributed his expertise to the historic task of building the International Space Station, working alongside NASA on this groundbreaking project.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Andy nurtured a lifelong passion for scouting, actively participating in the Boy Scouts of America and instilling valuable life skills in countless young men. For his achievements, he was awarded the Silver Beaver volunteer achievement award.
He was particularly proud of his grandchildren Xavier, Emma, Claire, Paul, and John, and cherished every moment spent with them. He always had a story to share or a picture to show.
Andy’s zest for life extended beyond his commitments. He possessed a lively curiosity, indulging in his hobbies of amateur radio, fossil hunting, rock collecting and gemstone mining, turning every expedition into an adventure. He was known for his irrepressible wit and loved to share stories, facts, and jokes, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Andy will be deeply missed by his wife, Linda Salaka; children Stephen Salaka, Laura Davis, and Nicholas Salaka; grandchildren; sisters Mary Pollack and Kathy Salaka, and countless friends and loved ones. While his absence leaves a void, his legacy of dedication and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A viewing will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Brownlie Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne, Florida. A Funeral Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 5 at 11:00, followed by US Air Force honors.
