Born on July 29, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York
Passed on January 7, 2025 in Melbourne, Florida

Surrounded by family, Joe Perk, a proud Marine Corps Veteran, historian/Civil War expert, and storyteller, died at his home on January 7, 2025, from complications due to a fall. The former Suntree resident was 94.

Joe Perk, the son of the late Joseph and Jeanette Pergolizzi, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 29, 1930. His deep love for Brooklyn inspired him to write “Brooklyn Savvy: Lessons Learned and Memoirs” in 2019. This book, filled with anecdotes and reflections, was a testament to his enduring affection for his hometown.

As a young man, Perk enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He valued his military service and carried the Marine Corps values—honor, courage, and commitment—with him throughout his life.

After his military service, Perk built a successful career with the New York Telephone Company, now Verizon. Whether traveling, golfing, exercising, or reading, Joe was curious, engaging, and always learning and exploring. He shared what he knew with a generous spirit and loved gathering a group—students at the local high school or veterans from the local area to bring Civil War battles to life.

Reading and learning fueled Joe’s storytelling, and there was always a story to be told. This was his gift and how he shared the places and people that meant the most to him.

Joe was devoted to his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his sons Bill (Donna) and Joe (Aurora); his daughters Barbara Scarpa (Frank) and Patricia Pedota (Chris); and Margaret’s sons, Christopher and Jason Murgia. The family also includes Joe’s 10 grandchildren, Margaret’s grandchildren, and Joe’s 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Jeanette Pergolizzi, his brother John, his first wife Patricia, and many family and friends, whom Joe also considered family.

A Requiem Mass will be held at St John Evangelist Church at a future date.
