Dr. Daniel M. Stingl, M.D.
Daniel “Dan” Mark Stingl was born on January 4, 1956 in Corpus Christi, Texas to the late Alfred and Josephine Stingl of McLean Virginia. His parents stressed learning and education as well as hard work to become self-sufficient and be successful. At an early age Dan showed signs of great intelligence, curiosity to constantly learn, and a natural entrepreneurial tendency. As a teenager he bought and sold old cars, fixing them up and reselling them.
Dan graduated in June 1973 from Langley High School in McLean, Virginia and then obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tufts University in June 1978. He was offered an engineering job in Texas but stated he was thinking he wanted to pursue being a doctor. To help Dan decide, his mother took him with her for 2 days to where she worked as a Head Nurse at NIH (National Institute of Health). He spent those days shadowing several doctors and announced he wanted to become a doctor. He would then complete a 2-year program in only one year receiving a master’s in biomedical engineering from University of Virginia. He then completed his medical degree in June 1983 from Medical College of Virginia (MCV now VCU) in Richmond Virginia. While in school his engineering background assisted him in designing and patenting medical tools which he felt were better designed and more effective than what was available at the time. Dr. “Dan” would begin his Internship at the Cleveland Clinic in July 1984 and begin his Residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation August 1987. He would be awarded a medical degree in Ophthalmology on May 16, 1987.
From September 1987 to December 1990 Dr. Dan would work in private practice at North Dakota Eye Clinic in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In January 1991 he relocated his family to Hermiston, Oregon where he founded Eagle Eye Clinic. Here he was the sole Ophthalmologist providing eye care within a 200-mile radius. During the summer months, Dr. Dan took the family to Belize to do mission work providing eye care to those less fortunate.
In July 1997 the family moved to Florida where for the next 10 years Dr. Dan established a private practice focusing on those less fortunate for no charge at The Christian Eye Clinic in Bonita Springs, Florida. He would spend his leisure time wind sailing and going to Disney World with the children.
In March 2008 he returned to private practice at Jacksonville Ophthalmologic Associates in Jacksonville, Florida before returning to the Naples area in October 2008. For the next seven years he worked at the Montgomery Eye Center (now Center for Sight) in Naples, Florida.
On June 12, 2011, he would marry his beautiful wife of 14 years, Angela. In October 2015 the family would move to Melbourne Florida where Dr. Dan opened his own private practice, Stingl Eye Clinic making this his home until his untimely death. He dedicated his life to helping others by providing passion and care to patients, peers and the community.
In his pastime Dr. Dan enjoyed wind surfing, playing guitar, dancing with Angela, studying together and going to 7/11 for Slurpee’s with Elizabeth, fishing and shooting fireworks with Alex, and fixing things inside and outside the house with Edward.
Dan’s highest honor and greatest role has been that of “Dad” to six beautiful children, four daughters and two sons:
Lauren Stingl (Diego), Katherine Cynthia “KC” Rappazzo (Tim), Cybil Alexandra “Sierra” Stingl; Elizabeth, Alexander “Alex” and Edward Stingl. He was extremely proud that KC and Sierra became medical doctors and that Lauren chose to serve her country in the Navy as did Dr. Dan’s father and mother.
He was also blessed to have six adored grandchildren: Luke, Madelyn, Joshua, Peter and Joel Rappazzo and Senna Stingl.
Dr. Dan is survived by three sisters and one brother: Bonnie Wolf (Tom), Sandra “Sandy” Stingl-Lee (Lawrence), David Stingl and Christina “Tina” Stingl.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his honor to The American Heart Association: American Heart Association

We were shocked and dismayed at Dan's passing. I will always remember his constant smile, his soft, easy tone and overall positive nature. Although he loved what he did professionally, I don't recall any conversations that didn't include gushing over the family and his beautiful wife. May God bless and keep you during this transition. Let us know if we can be of assistance in any way. Ed and Becky Hayes

Dear Angela, Galina and I are still in shock over Dan's sudden passing. We all had so much fun at the parties, he was truly one of a kind. Of all his accomplishments, I know he was happiest being a father. I was honored to have known him, and to have called him my friend.

We are shocked and saddened to hear of Dan’s sudden passing. He truly was a remarkable man and excellent ophthalmologist who enjoyed his practice. We got to know Dan and Jonica when they came to Hermiston through our association at the hospital. Our two daughters were a tad older than Lauren and KC and they became great friends. We so enjoyed their friendship, the hiking, motor home trips, camping, church potlucks and dinners and mini motorcycles. Such great memories. He is missed by all and gone way too soon! Our love, prayers and hugs reach out to all who loved and miss him.

Dear Stingl Family,
It has been hard for all of us to absorb the fact that Dan is gone. Our family has so many memories of shared times with visits of us in McLean or all of you in Levittown or together at the beach. Many hours were spent playing cards & games & always laughing! Through all of the fun Dan would always be looking for new adventures & better, more innovative ways to do things. I remember one year we were all at Ortley Beach when my Mom(Aunt Ruth) discovered Dan’s sneakers were the source of a horrible odor and made him throw them outside on the porch. Dan decided it was a great way to catch flies because there were hundreds of them attracted to his shoes. I guess my Dad (Uncle Bill) agreed with him because he spent most of his vacation sitting on the porch with a fly swatter! Meanwhile, Dan moved on to bigger adventures.
It has been a long while since we have all been together but the memories live on!
Love to all of you,

My buddy Sting and I were closest of friends since we trained together at the Cleveland clinic.
I learned a lot from Dan because he was knowledgeable in so many fields; he could repair any car, build remodel or repair any building from the electrical to the plumbing to the structural.. He got me into trading stocks, and his knowledge and curiosity of financial markets was amazing.
I watched him build a vineyard from bare land on the rocky slopes of the Columbia River-the grapes would grow, but he never mastered the winemaking process.
I took Sting down the steep narrow slopes of the Rocky Mountains and made him a better skier, he put me on a board on the Columbia river and taught me to be a good wind surfer.
Ophthalmology was our common background and we shared Our achievements as well as our failures with each other. Sting dropped out of organized medicine in his mid 40s for almost 10 years, only running his free eye clinic in Florida. When he had finally had enough windsurfing, fishing, Disney World with his girls and managing the many rental properties— he returned to the hustle, bustle of a busy ophthalmology practice in Naples. However, surgical ophthalmic skills require constant attention. Dan needed help getting back in the game, and as chief of Surgery at my institution I was able to steer him in a direction to regain his very talented abilities. He was soon doing many many cases a week with excellent results.
His final professional move was to open his own clinic in Melbourne Florida. His new young family and solo practice kept him busy enough that we were not able to see each other on a regular basis. I regret that now.
My sympathies to the family and all who were close to Dan, he will be greatly missed.

Dr. Dan was a great friend to me.
My mother said he was the best doctor she ever knew by solving an eye problem no other doctor was able to do.
I will miss Dan and our conversations.
Dan”s passing leaves a void in my life.

I send my deepest sympathies to the entire Stingl family. I am a good friend of Dan's sister Sandy, and we grew up together and went to school together in McLean, Virginia. Even as a young man, Dan had an amazing reputation for his brilliance, as evidenced by his life and career. But more important, his dedication to those less fortunate is certain to be rewarded in his heavenly life. May you all be comforted by his many accomplishments and the kindness he showed to others. My prayers are with you.
