Born on June 10, 1961 in Melbourne, Florida
Departed December 2, 2023 in Palm Bay, Florida

Richard Gary Mousseau passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family and friends, on December 2, 2023 leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on all who knew him. A lifelong Floridian, Gary was born on June 10, 1961 at the Melbourne Hospital to Richard and Bettie Mousseau. He attended Croton Elementary, Johnson Middle School and Eau Gallie High where he joined band and developed his lifelong love of music . He went on to attend the University of South Florida, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1986 and dedicated his entire career to Music Education. Gary taught in Brevard and Hillsborough county public schools for a total of 35 years; thousands of students between the age of Pre-K to 12th grade have not only learned to play music but also benefited from his amazing kindness and devotion to their pursuit of learning.

In addition to teaching, Gary was also a talented musician as well who performed as a string bass player with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra along with many other local groups starting in 1990 and continuing thru 2023. A dedicated player, Gary was one to never miss a rehearsal or performance, often arriving early and staying late to always be prepared. In his free time, he also loved to play with his trio, The Wild & Blue Band, in order to “let his hair down” and play some great bluegrass, gypsy jazz and folk tunes.

Gary met his wife Maureen at USF and they married in 1987; they shared a life full of love, adventure and true devotion for 38 years. Gary is survived by his two children with whom he adored with all of his heart; Justin (Casey) and Jenna (Tyler). He also leaves behind his two brothers; Scott (Julie) and Chris (Lisa) in addition to many loving nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Gary touched the hearts of so many with his kindness, generosity and true concern for others. Recently Gary confronted his final challenge, a battle with advanced cancer. Despite the physical toll, he continued to display incredible bravery, finding peace in the love and support of his family and friends. Thank you to everyone who visited, he valued your company. In honoring Gary, let us celebrate the love he shared and the indelible mark he left on this world. His memory will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew him. May his life story inspire us to reflect on our own journey so that we offer grace and love to others without boundaries, just as Gary did. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to your local school’s music program in his memory.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for December 17, 2023 at 12:00pm. The location will be Eau Gallie High School Auditorium, 1400 Commodore Blvd. Melbourne, FL 32935. All of his friends and family are welcome to join in Celebration of a life well lived.
