Tommy Melvin Beatty, 81, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Born September 15, 1944, in Leesburg, Florida, to Porter Elmer and Bertie Mae Beaty, Tommy spent part of his childhood in South Georgia before settling in Melbourne, Florida. He graduated from Melbourne High School in 1964, beginning a life defined by dedication, curiosity, and steady perseverance.

In 1965, Tommy married Judy Schmitt. Though their marriage later ended, they shared the joy of raising two daughters together and remained connected through their family and beloved grandchildren.

After high school, Tommy proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He later built a long and successful career as an electrical engineer at Harris Semiconductor, where he worked for 17 years. Deeply committed to service and community, Tommy also proudly volunteered for over 25 years with the West Melbourne Volunteer Fire Department, answering the call to help others with quiet strength and reliability. Known for his sharp mind and strong work ethic, Tommy was also active in the West Melbourne Jaycees and Toastmasters. Even after leaving Harris, he continued to stay busy, taking on projects and work that reflected his lifelong drive to remain engaged and productive.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Nellie B. and Maynard Mitchell, and his son-in-law, Gerald Beckham. He is survived by his longtime partner, Sandra Grochow, who shared ten loving years with him; his daughters, Vanessa (Chris) Manning and Katrina Beckham; and his grandchildren, Blake, Alexandra, Grace, Sam, Rachael, Veronica, Colette, and Michael, all of whom brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by several cousins, his nephews, and his niece, whom he loved dearly.

Tommy will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 1, at 2:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church of Melbourne, located at 3301 Dairy Road, Melbourne, Florida.
