Diana Berg Sheffield, a beloved long-time resident of Melbourne, Florida, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 29, 2024, in Clermont, Florida, at the age of 92. Born on January 22, 1932, in Melbourne, Diana lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to her family and community.
Diana graduated from Melbourne High School in 1950, when it was part of the old Ruth Henegar building. She pursued higher education at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and later at Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida, where she graduated in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Secretarial Science.
Diana began her professional career as a secretary at North American Aviation at Cape Canaveral. In 1957, she married Eugene Vernon Sheffield, Jr. at the First Methodist Church in Melbourne. After their marriage, Diana dedicated herself to raising their family. In 1984, she returned to work as a secretary at Melbourne’s First United Methodist Church, later serving as the church’s Membership and Financial Secretary until 1989.
A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Melbourne, Diana’s faith and commitment to her community were evident in her many roles. She was a member of the Abigail Wright Chamberlain Chapter (started by her mother Lucille), National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; the United States Daughters of the American Colonists; the United States Daughters of 1812; and the Genealogical Society of South Brevard. Diana was also a charter member of the Melbourne Municipal Band, where she played the flute and piccolo, and co-chairman of the Old Melbourne High School Reunion Committee for the classes of 1920-1950.
Diana had a passion for music, photography, and researching family history. She also loved to travel and was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Europe in her later years, a dream she never thought possible. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Vernon Sheffield, Jr.; her parents, Royal Howard Berg and Lucille Peck Berg; and her brothers, Howard, Robert, and Bradford Berg. She is survived by her children, Robert Sheffield (Linda), Stanley Sheffield (Catherine), Susan Sheffield, and Randall Sheffield (Nan); her grandchildren, Justin (Madison), Laura, Katelyn (William), Camden, Hunter, and Amelia; her great-grandchildren, Cooper and Olivia; her nieces, Christy, Beverly, Bonnie, Margaret, Anne, Patricia, and Martha; and her nephew, Howard III. Diana will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 3rd, at 3 PM at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home, 1010 Palmetto Avenue, Melbourne, Florida 32901. (321)723-2345.
