Richard Furstenberg was born on May 12, 1949, in Houston, Texas, carrying with him the quiet strength, warmth, and steadfast spirit that would define his life. As the oldest of seven children, Richard learned early the meaning of responsibility, patience, and family loyalty. He was incredibly family-oriented, the kind of brother who looked out for everyone and the relative who brought joy wherever he went. Family reunions were among his favorite traditions—he was always the most fun one there, laughing, telling stories, and making everyone feel welcome. Known for his ever-joyful smile and the best hugs, Richard had a remarkable way of knowing when someone needed one, making every moment brighter.
He attended South Texas Jr. College in 1969 before enlisting in the military, where he served his country with honor for six years. His time in service shaped the values he lived by every day—integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others.
Richard later made his home in Florida, where he began what would become an extraordinary 42-year career with Harris Corporation in Melbourne. His dedication to the company was more than the length of service; it reflected the relationships he nurtured and the pride he took in meaningful, collaborative work. He showed up for others with consistency, reliability, and wholehearted effort. Colleagues knew him as someone who could be counted on, who listened with empathy, and who brought stability and kindness into every room.
Richard’s life was deeply rooted in faith. Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, FL was not just his parish—it was his spiritual home. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan with reverence and humility. He was an active member of the youth ministry team, offering guidance and encouragement to young people in their journeys. His hours spent in the Adoration Chapel reflected his devotion, and his quiet acts of service throughout the parish embodied the humility he was known for.
As a person, Richard had a gift for connection. He knew everyone, no matter where he went—greeting friends and strangers alike with genuine warmth. He made time for people, whether they were lifelong loved ones or someone he had just met. His kindness and acts of service were infectious, inspiring others to give more of themselves. Richard was the life of the party, with a sense of humor that could light up a room and a sweetness that put others at ease. And in true Richard fashion, whenever anyone asked how he was doing, he almost always answered with a cheerful, “super”—a word that became both his signature and a reflection of the optimism he carried through life. Honest, committed, and joyful, he showed up for everyone—mentally, physically, and emotionally. He celebrated life in both the extraordinary and the everyday moments, leaving those around him feeling seen, supported, and loved.
Even in his struggle with Alzheimer’s, the twinkle in his eyes never diminished. He never lost his smile, his gentle spirit, or the unmistakable personality that made him who he was. His resilience, grace, and ability to shine through even the hardest moments became yet another testament to the beauty of his life.
He will be remembered for his devotion to his faith, his family as a loving husband of 46 years, a father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and to his community, and the enduring kindness he carried into every corner of his life. His legacy is one of service, humility, joy, and a spirit that—much like his favorite reply—was always a little more than good. It was super.
On September 28, 2025, he was called to dwell in the house of our Lord.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church, 2950 N. Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32935, on January 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Houston, Texas, with date and details to be determined.
