Norwood Stanhope, Jr. was born July 17, 1931 in Vincennes, Indiana to Norwood and Cleo Martin Stanhope, Sr. He passed on August 23, 2021 in Melbourne, Florida.
His family includes his wife of 68 years Mary Jo Stanhope; sons Gregg (Brenda) Stanhope and Robert Stanhope; grandchildren Michael (Alissa), Matthew (Charlotte); and sister Jo Ann Litherland. Norwood was a devoted spouse, father, uncle, grandfather and a friend of everyone. He is predeceased by a bother Richard Stanhope and a sister Dorothy Courtney.
Norwood graduated from Purdue University in 1954 and began his 30 year career with Marathon Oil Company on February 3, 1954. He worked as a refinery engineer for the Process Engineering Department, and served honorably in the US Army from May 1954 through May 1956. He was then rehired as an Associate Process Engineer for the Process Engineering Department. With the general reorganization of the Illinois Refining Division in December of 1962, he became associated with the Engineering Department.
During his employment he began in Robinson, Illinois and then transferred to La Coruna, Spain where he worked for Marathon International Oil Company from June 1963 through January 1965. From there, he went to Findlay, Ohio for a short time before being transferred to Burghausen, Germany. There, he worked in the capacity of Advanced Engineer, then as Supervisor of Major Projects within the Technical Department. On July 12, 1969 , he returned to Robinson, Illinois as Advanced Refining Engineer in the Engineering Department. He transferred into the Operations Department in the same capacity on January 16, 1970. Norwood was promoted to Manager of the Products Control Department on August 1, 1977 and became the Manager of the Engineering Department on July 1, 1983. He began early retirement from Marathon on July 1, 1986.
He held leadership positions with the Masonic Temple in Robinson, Illinois and was a Eucharistic minister in Vero Beach, Florida for the Church of Christ.
Norwood was also an active member of the Sebastian Art Club in Sebastian, Florida and an avid sports fan. His favorite activities were snow skiing (until age 82), sailing, swimming, golfing and watching football.
A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Brownlie Maxwell Funeral Home, 1010 E. Palmetto Avenue, Melbourne, Florida at 2 pm.
