Lloyd Norwood “Bear” Cowan

Our beloved “Bear”, Lloyd Norwood Cowan, age 93, passed away on February 20 at home after a brief illness. He is survived by his two sons, Joseph Lloyd and Timothy Scott. He was preceded in death by his forever wife, Mary Elizabeth. They are together now. Moving down from Pittsburgh in the mid 50s, he lived in two houses, the whole time in Melbourne. he was so proud to have served in the United States Navy in the early 50s. He became a lifelong member of VFW Post 4206 as well as American Legion Post 81. Later in life, he became a member of the “Tin Can Sailors” organization.
A great deal of his working years were spent at the United States Postal Service right here in Melbourne. Way much more often than not, he worked two jobs to take care of his family. Plumber, glazier, furniture and appliance delivery, Fuller Brush salesman were just a few of his “second jobs“ he worked. Even on retirement from the US Postal Service, he still did the landscaping for the local union hall, as well as several neighbors who were seasonal residents. Anecdotes, stories, and observations on life were elevated to a whole new status by Lloyd. Later in life, he took on an intense enjoyment of golf with his sons and buddies. Not particularly good, he approached his love of the game within enthusiasm and unbridled pleasure. One of the trips he took with his sons to Augusta, Georgia to view the practice rounds of the Masters golf tournament. He never forgot that. He could even talk about playing golf in Homer, Alaska while on a 50th wedding anniversary RV trip with his Mary and boys.
Crossing the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic, he was able to regale his family and friends with stories about what a great country we have, and the sites he saw. Later in life, he became a walking, breathing historian, on the growth of Melbourne and it citizens.
He and Mary will be interred at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. Joanne Ebeling, “our Aunt Joanne”, has our deepest respect in love for being with Tim and Joe. She is the daughter Bear, and Mary never had. She loved these two fiercely.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to any charities that you support. Lloyd would have treasured that.
Lloyd “Bear” is at peace now. He is with the Lord, with his Mary, and in our hearts forever. Oh the stories we will hear when we are with him again.
