Mel Honeycutt

Born on February 11, 1936 in Hope Mills, North Carolina
Passed on September 20, 2025. in Palm Bay, Florida

Mel Honeycutt, 89, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, September 20th, 2025.

A retired Major in the United States Air Force, Mel lived a life of service, discipline, and devotion to both his country and his family. A pioneer in the space industry, he devoted his career to advancing America’s journey into the heavens. He contributed to the historic Mercury and Gemini missions, the Apollo program that carried mankind to the moon, and later to the MX Missile and the Trident D5 Missile programs, which helped secure our nation. His work left a lasting mark on history and stands as a testament to his brilliance, dedication, and perseverance.

As remarkable as his professional accomplishments were, he will be most remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and man of faith. He shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife of 62 years, Linda, and together they raised four children: Todd (Christina), Leah Loffek (Joe), Tim (Kim) and Ben (Sarah). He was also blessed with seven cherished grandchildren, who brought him great joy: Jeremiah, Cailyn, Joel, Zachary, Elijah, Malachi and Asher. His devotion to his family was unwavering, and his greatest pride was found in the love they shared.

His life was anchored in his deep faith in Jesus Christ. That faith guided his steps, shaped his character, and gave him peace in every season of life.

A service to honor his life will be held at Calvary Chapel Melbourne on Friday, September 26th, at 4 p.m.

Growing up, I knew him as "Mr. Honeycutt," my best friend's dad. The moment you walked in the door, you could feel his quiet, but strong, presence. Mr. Honeycutt was genuinely one of the kindest souls I ever met. He wasn't a man of many words, but still managed to be larger than life. It seemed there wasn't anything he couldn't do, anything he couldn't fix, no challenge to which he couldn't rise. He was a model of strength, competence, and kindness. He embodied the meekness of which Jesus speaks in Matthew 5. I've heard it said that a proper understanding of the Greek word from which meekness is translated, should evoke the image of a soldier who keeps his sword sheethed when others might be quicker to draw. It's more of a controlled strength than what we think of when we hear the word "meek." That's not far from how I remember Mr.Honeycutt. A rock upon whom those around him could depend. I haven't seen him in many years, even decades. But he made quite an impression on me, as a child. I can picture him clearly, as though our paths crossed just days ago. He will be missed. My prayers are with you all.
