After basic training at Sampson Air Force Base in New York, he served in Mississippi,
Alabama France and Spain and was discharged at Hanscom Field MA in 1974. He
always wanted to be in Florida, so in June that’s where he immediately headed.
Trained as a Dental Lab Technician in the Air Force, after his retirement he continued
that career with his own business, Coronal Dental Lab until 2014.
Austin was a Steelers, Pirates and Penguins fan. He enjoyed watching all sports,
especially NASCAR with season tickets to Daytona for over 25 years; one year he
attended 13 races in Florida, Virginia, North Carolina Tennessee and Michigan. Even
though a Steelers fan, he had season tickets to Tampa Bay Bucks for many years —
just because he liked football. Although not a fan of basketball, he did attend some
Magic games with his wife, Linda. Baseball spring training season found him traveling
all around Florida to catch as many games as possible.
Linda took him to Alaska, where she was raised, where he saw moose, her family’s
cabin outside Anchorage and to Chena Hot Springs near Fairbanks. Another trip to
Australia to ride camels in the outback, drink bush tea, and watch the sunrise over
Ayers Rock; see kangaroos in Alice Springs; climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge; hold
koala bears near Sydney; and feed baby kangaroos at a rescue center near Melbourne.
