Gary Lee Gerhard
Born on July 13, 1942 in Wilmington, OhioDeparted February 20, 2023 in Melbourne, Florida
In loving memory of our father, Gary Lee Gerhard, who passed away on February 20, 2023. He was a devoted husband of 63 years to his wife, Jane Gerhard. He was a loving father to Angie Bennett (David), Butch Gerhard (Julie), and Glenn Gerhard (Marcia). Gary is loved by his ten grandchildren: Hailey Reidy, Chase Cameron, Gray Gerhard, Casey Keller, Sarah Cameron, Ashley Gerhard, Rachelle Edwards, Amber Conlin, Brittany Wheeler, and Ty Bennett, as well as his 10 great grandchildren. Gary was predeceased by his mother and father, Nida and Lou Gerhard, as well as his three siblings: Allen Gerhard, Evon Tasinelli, and Ann DuPriest. He will be deeply missed by our family and all who knew him.
Born in Wilmington, Ohio, Gary moved to Florida with his parents and three siblings at the age of five and remained a Melbourne resident thereafter. He attended Melbourne High School where he met the love of his life, Jane, and graduated in 1960.
Gary was originally hired by RCA in 1962 in the Optics Lab. He then moved to Radiation Inc. in 1970, which later became L3Harris Technologies, where he retired after working in engineering for 38 years. This work experience gave him lifelong friends and knowledge that he continued to utilize long after his retirement. No metal or machinery was safe from being torn apart for examination and rebuilding, after being coated in endless amounts of bull or never-seez.
As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed everything from hunting and fishing to lobster diving and scalloping with his children, grandchildren, and friends that he considered family. Nothing brought him more joy than enjoying a glass of Buffalo Trace around the fire while sharing tales with his hunting camp family. He was always the first to offer praise or a comedic response that got everyone laughing while concluding the day’s activities.
Gary was an honest and giving man, who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. He faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage.
Early in life, Gary learned the importance of hard work and he instilled that same work ethic in his children and grandchildren. He was always there for others, and always willing to offer help to those who needed it. He was a man of strong character, and emphasized the importance of family, hard work, and always doing what is right. Our father was a true role model who we will always look up to.
His funeral service will be held at Melbourne Church of Christ, 810 Hollywood Blvd, West Melbourne, FL 32904 on March 4, 2023, at 11 am.
Dad you are now at peace, but you will live forever in our hearts. We love you so much. Rest in peace.
