Passed January 30, 2025 in Melbourne, Florida
Carol Ann (Kratch) Engle, a loving and devoted mother, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025 at the age of 88 in Melbourne, Florida.
She was born April 11, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Bellerose, Queens by David Kratch and Elizabeth Harper, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, David C Engle, and her brother David A Kratch.
Carol is survived by son Paul Engle, his wife Lori, son Karl Engle, sister-in-law Carol Kratch, three nieces, a nephew, and eight grand-nieces and nephews.
She made the care of others a lifelong commitment. In her 20s she was a physician’s nurse. Over her lifetime she took care of autistic children, was awarded a Masters degree in social work, provided counseling services to teens and battered women, was a literacy volunteer, and a hospital candy striper in her 70s. She was a generous donor to numerous charities, and a constant supporter of women, minorities, and those in need of assistance.
Carol was a mom not only to her two sons, but maintained an open door policy to all the children in the neighborhood, where she received regular young visitors whether the boys were home or not. She enjoyed working with her hands, becoming skilled at photography, stained glass, gardening, and sewing. She was an avid reader, continuing to educate herself throughout her life on forgotten women in history, and the plight of those struggling, or less fortunate. Toward the end of her life, she put the same passion into caring for her orchids, and her beloved little dog, Shadow.
