Catherine “Cathy” Louise Helm

Born on June 18, 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut
Departed May 6, 2023 in Palm Bay, Florida

Catherine “Cathy” Louise Helm (Detrick) passed away on Saturday, May 6, at Palm Bay Hospital. She was 66 years old.
Cathy was born and raised in New Haven, CT and, drawn by the southern warmth, moved to Florida in 1985. She attended Brevard Community College and graduated with an Associates of Arts degree in 2000. Her career consisted of document control, logistics and configuration management; her entrepreneur spirit led her to start her own business helping others. She met the love of her life, Grant, and they married in 1996. The couple settled into a home in Melbourne and lived there until her death. Cathy loved animals and would often have a menagerie of cats and dogs. Her dog, Marlo, captured her heart and the two were inseparable. Cathy also loved to cook, and she was great at it! During family gatherings, everyone flocked to whatever Cathy had prepared ~ especially her desserts ~ from scratch! No boxed cake mixes would ever grace her shelves. Other activities Cathy enjoyed were spending time boating with Grant and Marlo, walking the causeways, helping others through her start-up business, and going to concerts (John Prine was a favorite).
Cathy has a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, a welcoming smile, and a warm spirit. She was always quick to lend a hand to friends, neighbors, and family in need. She was a beautiful soul with a heart for helping others.
Cathy was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Canning and grandparents. Survivors include her devoted husband of 25 years, Grant; son, Maxwell Cantor; father, Robert Detrick; brothers, Robert, Peter, and Leslie; sister, Cynthia Detrick; and many nieces and nephews. She was beloved by the entire Helm family.
A celebration of Cathy’s life and impact on others will be held at a future date.

Cathy was a kind and thoughtful soul. Her love of her family, her animals and cooking really shined in her. She was also a lot of fun - full of joy and laughter - always so giving... I will miss spending time with her and hope she was able to find peace in the end as she left us.

Cathy was a wonder full caring and loving daughter-in-law. She was a great cook. i can remember when would come home from long trips, there were always several meals prepared for us. Often when her husband Grant, our youngest son came to our house to perform some needed repairs, she would be along to provide tools and stand by for assist. She was his constant companion. Her quiet demeanor belied a loving and willing spirit to bring help to Priscilla and me. We all are much better for having known her. May she be received in the arm of the Lord. Have a great trip home Cathy.
