Charles Stanley “Chuck” Symeon
Charles Stanley Symeon, affectionately known as Chuck, passed away on January 14, 2025 at the age of 88. He departed peacefully in his room at Melbourne Terrace Rehabilitation Center’s long-term care.
Born on August 9, 1936 in Stamford, Connecticut, Chuck had a wonderful life. He was an outstanding baseball pitcher during his early years. Chuck’s little-bigger team in Stamford won the 1952 Little-Bigger World Series championship. Chuck, a right-handed pitcher, was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the ’52 Little-Bigger World Series, held in Trenton, New Jersey.
In the 1950’s, Chuck graduated from St. Basil’s Preparatory School in Stamford, and he received a baseball scholarship to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Chuck had remarkable baseball career at Notre Dame. His 1957 Fighting Irish team advanced to the NCAA College World Series, marking the first appearance for Notre Dame in the College World Series, which is held annually in Omaha, Nebraska. Chuck’s team finished third in the tournament that year.
In 1959, Chuck graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Prior to his graduation, Chuck signed a multi-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He played professionally with the Orioles’ farm system (Minor League Baseball affiliates) in the United States and Canada in the late 1950s and early ’60s. Among those minor league teams he played for were: Aberdeen (South Dakota) Pheasants, Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) Mounties, Amarillo (Texas) Gold Sox, York (Pennsylvania) White Roses, Little Rock (Arkansas) Travelers and Fox Cities (Appleton, Wisconsin) Foxes. In one of his years in professional baseball, Chuck did participate with the Baltimore Orioles in spring training at the Orioles’ spring training site in Miami, Florida.
Even though Chuck had success in his professional baseball career, he decided to pursue his career in electrical engineering. He returned home to Stamford and worked for Sperry Corporation in nearby Wilton, Connecticut.
In 1963, Chuck married Lynn Deters in Dayton, Ohio. The two met at a wedding of Chuck’s best friend in Dayton. Lynn, who had resided in Dayton, was preparing to move to Stamford in pursuit of her career in elementary teaching. Chuck and Lynn lived in Stamford before heading to Melbourne, Florida in 1964 when Chuck accepted a position at Radiation, Inc., the forerunner of Harris Corporation.
Chuck worked at Harris Corp. for 29 years, mainly for Harris’ Semiconductor division. He methodically worked his way up to title of Director of Reliability and Quality Assurance at Harris Semiconductor before his retirement in June 1994.
Just prior to his retirement in ’94, Chuck participated in “Dodger Fantasy Camp” at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. It was Christmas gift for Chuck from Lynn, and it was certainly a gift that he cherished for the remainder of his life.
Chuck and Lynn were married for 61 years. They enjoyed their Indialantic, Florida home for over 56 years.
During his 30-year retirement, Chuck was active in the community in Melbourne, volunteering his time extensively for Daily Bread and its distribution center. He was also active with Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Melbourne Beach, Florida, serving as a Eucharistic Minister as well as serving time in the men’s club for the church. Chuck and Lynn enjoyed numerous vacations together in Europe, Canada and throughout the United States. His favorite activity in life was being with his family. Chuck’s favorite sports were baseball and college football, and his hobbies included photography and gardening.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Lynn, daughter, Mary Beth, and sons, Paul and Chris, as well as Chuck’s two brothers, Paul Symeon, and his wife, Judy, and Ted Symeon, and his wife, Sharyn. Chuck had two grandchildren: P.J. Symeon and Samantha Symeon.
