Passed on January 12, 2025 in Rockledge, Florida

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of James “Jimi” DePietro’s passing on January 12, 2025, from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Jimi was born at Ramstein Air Force Base in Landstuhl, Germany, on June 1, 1959.

Jimi was a devoted and loving husband, father, Pop Pop, and friend. His faith in the Lord Jesus was the cornerstone of his life. His love for his family ran deep, and his loyalty to his friends was unwavering. Over the years, he came alongside many to mentor and guide them. From sharing the good news and love of Jesus, to helping others find employment, to teaching guitar, to writing business plans, to pressure washing the neighbors’ driveways, his caring for others goes on and on. He had a great sense of humor, and his smile could light up a room. He was truly one of a kind.

Jimi spent most of his career in the defense industry, served on the ministry staff at Calvary Chapel of Melbourne, and took a wild ride with Harley Davidson. However, his greatest pride was working alongside his beloved daughter, Sarah, as co-owner of Southern Caramel for the past 6 years. He cherished working with her and helping to shape Southern Caramel into the company it is today. His daughters were his pride and joy.

Known by his friends as a “renaissance man,” Jimi’s intelligence and wisdom were evident in his vast knowledge and varied interests. He was an accomplished musician and had an immense talent for playing his guitar. He led many rock and roll bands through the years, and enjoyed leading praise and worship at church. He loved making music with his daughter, Allison, and found great joy in listening to her beautiful voice. In addition to music, Jimi enjoyed woodworking, cars, shooting sports, and hunting. Some of his most cherished memories were of spending time in the woods at Kempfer Ranch with his daughters and beloved sons-in-law, talking about life and imparting life lessons.

His wife Pam, was the love of his life. They were married for over 40 years and did everything together. Their legacy of love and putting God first in their lives will live on in their children and grandchildren.

Jimi is survived by his wife, Pam; daughters Sarah Smith and Allison Hohnbaum; sons-in-law Jared Smith and Chuck Hohnbaum; and grandchildren Olivia Smith, George Hohnbaum, and sweet new baby Hohnbaum, who will be born next month. He would have loved to hold this sweet baby in his arms, but is not missing a thing, as he is walking hand in hand with our Lord in Heaven. He is also survived by his brother Joe DePietro; sister-in-law Merilee DePietro; mother-in-law Chris French; father-in-law Bill French; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Tera and Chad McNaughton; nieces, nephews, great niece and great nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, James and Ann DePietro, and his sister, Sharon Hendren. While family by blood and marriage are named here, Jimi had very close friends whom he genuinely considered family. These individuals were very dear to Jimi and will continue to be held closely by his surviving family.

Contributions in his honor can be made in the form of loving your families and spending quality time with them. Teach them about Jesus. Be a loyal and caring friend, just as Jimi was.

So many years have passed since we worked together at Lanier in Daytona. Sorry we didn't get to visit again. I have always known you as a true gentleman. Sorry if this seems disjointed. It is such a shock. You always think they'll be more time.

I worked with Him at DRS and still recall that happy smile. Always willing to help others and so enthusiastic. We ran into him at the caramel shop and had no idea he was there and part of this beautiful place! Suddenly he came out of the back because he recognized my voice. Big smile and hello. That's when we learned about Salted Caramel. Thanks for all the smiles and enthusiasm. Hi in God's love and blessings, Val Fillmore

It is very evident that Jimi was one special godly man. He touched the lives of so many in a loving, caring display of God's call on his life to serve in His name. His legacy is rich and lives on in his beautiful family, friends and those who knew him. I'm praying you each find peace and comfort in your hearts as you mourn his passing from this earth; yet knowing you will be reunited in the Glory of Heaven.

Jim was an extraordinary man gifted with a huge intellect and wide variety of talent. His love for Sarah and Pam was evident from the moment I formed a professional relationship with him which so quickly turned to friendship. Although time and distance took its toll on the closeness of our friendship, I will most remember his love of family, drive to serve God, sense of humor and our working lunches of Jerk Chicken and dirty rice from a hole in the wall kitchen. He is with his savior today.

I've lost a friend and someone I always looked up to. We didn't see each other near as often as I should have but when we did it was as if we'd seen each other yesterday. I'm sorry I took so long my Friend...again. You made an indelible mark on many of my thoughts.

We were so heavy-hearted to hear of Jim's battle with AML. We fondly remember you all from the early days of Calvary Chapel Melbourne, as well as the joy of hearing Jim cranking in the band. Our hearts are broken for you, Pam, Sarah, and Allison - but also so grateful for the wonderful way Jim loved you all. You will all continue to be in our prayers.

Although we did not know Jim well, we had a deep admiration for him thru the conduct we observed in Pam. Her obvious love and respect for her husband was clearly reflected on a daily basis. We know she, the family and friends will miss him dearly. Although we mourn Jim's passing with them, we rejoice he is pain free and walking hand in hand with Jesus.

My husband, Gary, and I met and became friends with Jim and Pam at Risen Life Church. Since my husband was a greeter on Sunday mornings we always arrived early while the worship team was still practicing. I’ll date myself here and tell you that 80’s dance music was the thing in my day. As I would walk into the sanctuary Jim would usually break into a refrain of some 80’s song and call out “name that tune”. Such a fond memory.

Guys, the praise band in heaven is really amping up now! Mr Jimi D was a phenomenal guitar player (I really remember one of his favorite original songs going something like "God is great, chocolate cake, fills the earth, fills the heavens" haha! Now he can find out what heavenly chocolate cake tastes like!). He was a team player, a great mentor, AND he took a chance and hired me on the worship staff over 20 yrs ago at Calvary. i see the incredible legacy he passed on through his daughters and many people whose lives he touched. I can't help but wonder what an incredible reception he got when he entered heavens gates!

Although I didn’t really get to know Jim, I could see his strength and love for family and life in the brief time I spent with him the past couple months. He smiled and seemed to cherish every moment he had. He was clearly loved by his family and friends. He will be missed. I pray his legacy of serving and loving lives on through everyone who knew and loved him. May God smile upon them as much as Jim did. I pray also that Pam and the rest of his family find peace and comfort in knowing he is now with the Lord.
