Jan Varga

Born on March 19, 1948, in Wyandotte, Michigan
Passed April 12, 2025, in Palm Bay, Florida

Jan Varga, age 77, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 12th, 2025. She was born on March 19th, 1948 in Wyandotte, Michigan to George and Theresa Varga.

Jan loved anything that required digging, whether it was in her beautifully tended garden, a diamond mine in Arkansas, creeks and riverbeds, or anywhere a fossil might be found. Metal detecting was also a big favorite. She had a well-loved collection of arrowheads, fossils, rocks, and shells that she had compiled. Sanibel Island, Clearwater Beach, and Caladesi Island were her favorite beach escapes. She was always up for a trip to Del’s Freez for ice cream.

Even more than she loved treasure hunting, Jan loved her family. She prayed faithfully for each and every member of her family, worried over each and every one, and was tremendously proud of their every accomplishment, no matter the size. She never really understood that her gift was providing a soft place to land.

Jan worked for the City of Melbourne in the Building Department for over 25 years. She became a Plans Examiner, after she passed the Plans Examiner Test on her first attempt.

She believed in God, doing the right thing, saving for a rainy day, and taught all of her family to always expect the unexpected. Twice cancer came to call, and both times she quietly and valiantly fought and won. She had no middle name, but it could have been Grace Under Pressure. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were all blessed by her strength of spirit, guidance, and unconditional love.

She is survived by her brother Reg Varga (Brenda), sister Terri Schweim, sister Tina Varga Duncan (Randy), daughters Jenny Wood (Eric) and Michelle Hamman, grandchildren Sarah Stanton (Marshall), Nick Hinton (Carly) Zack Reising, and Lydia Hamman, two great-grandchildren, Blake Stanton and Elijah Hinton, and many nieces and nephews and their children.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, George and Theresa, her two older sisters, Carolyn and Gloria, and her son, David Hamman.
