She was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey on October 17, 1924 to John and Florence Melcher Dowling. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1941.

Midge was employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in Newark, New Jersey and retired from Verizon as supervisor of the benefit office in 1985 after 25 years of service. In 1989, she moved to Melbourne Beach with her husband Russell C. Muter. He pre-deceased her in November of 2009. She then moved from the PINE CREEK development to The Fountains where she resided for 11 years before moving to an assisted living facility near by.
