Mary Marguerite Smith
Mary Marguerite Smith, known to most as Marge, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026 in her home in Melbourne, Florida, surrounded by her family. She is survived by their son David, his wife Karen, and their sons Troy and Garrett. A Celebration of Marge’s Life will be held for friends and family in Florida, in the upcoming months.
Marge was born in Baltimore, Maryland in November of 1940 to her parents Christine and Albert E. Richards. Sadly, her mother Christine passed away when Marge was only 3 years old, and her father Albert, subsequently passed away when Marge was only 7 years old. Marge has the good fortune of having a very supportive family (Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, etc.) to help raise her. As a result, as a child and teenager, she spent time in Maryland and South Carolina with relatives.
Marge’s upbringing gave her a strong will, a loving heart, and instilled a fearlessness in her. She was brave. She was honest. She was hard-working. She was steadfast in her beliefs, and she would and could run circles around mostly everybody around her. 
After moving into her own apartment, and buying her first car, she took a job at Black & Decker in Hampstead, MD. In her apartment building, in the neighboring town of Greenmount, MD, she met another tenant, who came to be the love of her life, David A. Smith Jr. (deceased August, 2025.) They dated very briefly, then Dave proposed. They married just a few months later in August of 1963. They were inseparable for 62 years! They bought their first home in Arbutus, MD in 1967, and lived there until 2022. Dave and Marge had one son, David Lee, born in 1970.
Marge aka “Grandma”, lived the majority of her life in Maryland with Dave, in their Arbutus home. 
After working for Webster Menswear for many years in the payroll department, Marge made the decision to come work at her husband’s Nationwide Insurance agency. Marge took the role of office manager. Marge and Dave spent many days “debating” who was the boss at work. There were strict rules, imposed by Marge, that there was to be “NO insurance talk after work hours.” Marge worked at the agency until she retired in the early 2000’s. She spent her retired days golfing, exercising, dancing, and spending time with her two cherished grandchildren. Her golf friends often referred to her as “Fairway Marge,” due to her innate ability to keep the ball straight down the fairway.
Marge was a “Baseball Mom.” Her husband Dave coached local baseball teams from the mid-1960’s until 2014. Marge attended many of those games, and prepared meals around practices, games, meetings, etc. That alone was a full-time job. When her son David began playing in 1977, she never missed a single game. She then attended every game her grandsons played in, as well. She spent an immense amount of time on baseball fields and hockey rinks – and she loved every single second of it. She loved watching the boys play, learn the game, and grow. Many of the “boys” from those teams still stayed in touch with her (and Dave) to this day.
Marge (and Dave) LOVED music and dancing (and Looney Tunes cartoons!) Mom truly loved Elvis Presley. She surrounded herself with Elvis and Looney Tunes memorabilia. Her favorite Elvis songs could often be heard playing in the house. There was no song she liked more than Elvis’s 1960 “Thrill of Your Love.” They spent SO MANY nights out dancing with their many friends, to their favorite 50’s and 60’s Rock ‘n Roll, and bluegrass music! They loved traveling up and down the east coast to different places to listen to their favorite bands/performers. In their travels, they developed a tremendous group of wonderful friends, many of which became lifelong friends. Bands like “The Fabulous Hubcaps” and “Kathie Martin and the Hotrods” didn’t play many gigs without Marge and Dave in the audience for several decades!
In early 2022, after enduring Covid lockdowns, and the frustration of the ever-increasing crime and taxation in Maryland, the entire family decided to move to Melbourne, Florida. As they had in Maryland, Marge and Dave made fast friends through their love of music and dancing. Marge enjoyed the beach, the warm weather, the sunshine, and her new pool and hot tub (she had ALWAYS wanted her own pool) – and they truly embraced the adventure of living in a beautiful new place!
Marge will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She cherished the time she had with the love of her life Dave, and she missed him dearly in their 8 ½ months apart, after his passing. Her love for him was abundant, and they enjoyed a long, happy life together – traveling, enjoying food and music, and the company of family and so many friends.
Marge always enjoyed spending time with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons. She loved sharing time with them, making new memories, and reminiscing about times gone by. Family was always “extra” important to Marge, and she truly cherished any time she could spend with them.
In the end, Marge knew her days were drawing short. She repeatedly expressed her gratitude for the long life she felt she was blessed to have experienced, for all the dear friends she met along the way, and for the family she helped create. As always, she wasn’t scared – she was prepared.
The only appropriate “Marge” way to end this obituary is with the traditional Looney Tunes sign off, so… “That’s all Folks!”
