Carlton Eugene “Gene” Hayes, born May 17, 1935 in Staunton, Virginia, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family. He was the son of John Jackson and Evelyn Hayes.

Gene proudly served in the United States Army for 23 years, retiring with the rank of 1st Sergeant (E 8). His distinguished military career included service in the Vietnam War and numerous overseas assignments, reflecting his deep dedication to his country.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Albertine “Tina” Hayes. Gene is also preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Brauner and grandson Stephen.

Gene is survived by his children: Patricia Long, John Stephen Hayes, Gary Hayes, and Michael Hayes. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Michele and Joanne; grandchildren Michelle, Rebecca, Stephanie, Robert, Phillip, Daniel, David, and Jack; great grandchildren Paige, Keila, Holly, Hudson, Alex, Eva, Roman, Joshua, Tyler, and Evan; and great great grandchildren Payton and Kaison.

Gene enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling across the country with Tina in their recreational vehicles, always accompanied by their beloved dogs. He had a deep love for wildlife and took great joy in feeding the birds and animals that visited his backyard each day. He was passionate about coaching youth baseball, loved to dance, and appreciated music of all kinds.

A proud American, Gene displayed his patriotism wherever he could — on flagpoles, cars, and around his home. Above all, he was a man of conviction who deeply loved and prioritized his family. He will be remembered with great love by all who knew him.

To commemorate Gene’s life, family and friends may call on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 US Highway 1, Mims, Florida. Family and friends should arrive at 1:15 pm and pull into lane “A”.
