Born on January 31, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois
Passed away September 10, 2026 in Melbourne, Florida
Susan is the daughter of Herbert and Jean Gumz, living her early years in Chicago, Arcadia, California, and Mt. Prospect, Illinois. She graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 1968.
She is survived by her husband Roger Wenninger, whom she met and fell in love with at Capital University, her daughter Sondra A. W. Collins and her husband Michael Collins, and her sister Barbara Willis and her husband James Willis. Her surviving grandchildren include Courtney Douglas and her husband Peter Douglas, and her great-grandchildren Emery Douglas and Griffin Douglas; Michael Collins, Jr. and his wife Erika Schwarz-Collins; Candace Collins-Nordman and her husband Erik Nordman, and her great-grandchildren Levi Nordman and Lincoln Nordman; Chase Collins and his wife Kelsey Collins, and her great-grandchildren Coast Collins and Crew Collins. Her surviving family includes her niece Mele Willis and her husband Chuck Lazarus, and their child Kainalu Lazarus; her niece Lani Willis and her husband Joel Spoonheim, and their children Naia Spoonheim and Milo Spoonheim.
Susan was a dedicated elementary school music educator for 37 years, teaching in Ohio, Indiana, Broward County, and for her last 20 years in Columbia Elementary School, Palm Bay in Brevard Public Schools, Florida. She was known for her inclusive approach to elementary music education. Every student in Susan’s music classroom experienced creating music with their voices, wind instruments, string instruments, and percussion instruments. Participation in music performances included all students, with quality and comprehensive music education permeating every part of the performance. Susan also was a proud member of the Florida Music Education Association and the Florida Elementary Music Education Association, valuing collaboration and professional learning with music educator colleagues from around the state.
Susan most cherished spending time with her family. Whether it was in person, over the phone, or over text (including many energetic bitmojis), she loved connecting with her family as often as possible. She was known in the family for her cookie making, with a signature cream cheese cut-out cookie that she and Roger made for the entire family every Christmas and for other important family events, as well as pie and cake baking. She cherished spending holidays together with as many family members as possible, and she typically always wanted those times to be documented with photos. She was also known for her thoughtful gifts that reflected the gift receiver, as well as often supporting worthy causes. And the family received a new Christmas tree ornament every year that always had her signature phrase, “Family…it’s all about LOVE!”
Susan’s hobbies were singing, walking, and everything Disney. She sang in Church choirs and the Brevard Community Chorus. She and her husband enjoyed walking at Gleason among the squirrels, doves, tortoises, and dogs. She affectionately called it “dog DisneyWorld.” She loved the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, neither of which she ever lost interest in after countless visits. Her fiftieth wedding anniversary meal was held in the castle at Disney World.
Her favorite places to visit were St. Augustine, Sanibel/Captiva, and Charleston, South Carolina, each of which had good food and large sailing schooners, in which she dearly loved to sail. Her cheerful disposition, love of family, and grit in the face of hardship are admirable and will be treasured.
Go in peace, dear Susan. See you at the feast!
Friends planning expressions of sympathy are asked to consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Florida Music Education Association.
A Memorial Service celebrating Susan’s life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, 1pm at Advent Lutheran Church at Suntree (7550 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne, FL 32940). All are welcome

Our beloved GGma will forever be remembered for her love of family, Disney, music, and baking. She brought so much love and joy into our lives, and we will treasure every memory. Her love will live on through all of us. We love you and will miss you always. ❤️🏰🎶
Our GGma was truly one of a kind. She filled our lives with so much love, laughter, music, and the sweetest memories. From her love of Disney and baking to the countless moments she shared with her family, she had a way of making everyone feel loved and at home.
Her greatest joy was her family, and we will forever treasure the love, traditions, stories, and special memories she gave us. She will be deeply missed, but her love will live on in all of us—especially in the generations of family who were lucky enough to call her GGma.
Until we meet again, GGma. We love you more than you’ll ever know!
I am sorry to hear of Susan's passing. I was her visiting string specialist teacher for her 20 years at Columbia Elementary. We had a common bond in that we both started in Brevard Public Schools in 1993. She was always proud of her students that continued on in music programs in the middle and high school ensembles. After her retirement, I continued to enjoy talking to her and Roger every time the Brevard Symphony played with the chorus or when we had special music programs at Advent Lutheran. I know that she was most proud of her daughter Sondra, who I remember playing flute in high school, and now is a fabulous elementary music educator in her own right. My condolences to Roger, Sondra; and the entire family.
Susan and I worked together at Columbia Elementary for all the years she was there. She was a wonderful person and I was lucky enough to go on the music field trips to Epcot with her when the students performed at Christmas. She will be missed.
So sorry for the families loss, you all are in my thoughts and prayers.
I was Susan‘s hairdresser for about 25 years and through the years we became very good friends not only were we friends, but she was my youngest son‘s music teacher at Columbia elementary in Palm Bay. And through the years we shared many feelings and secrets. You know as hairdressers and clients do I saw her every three weeks one week would be a haircut. The next three weeks would be highlights. We spent a lot of time together through the years and I love this woman with everything I am!! I will never forget our conversations advice to me advice to her whatever what’s going on in life. I will miss her very dearly, but I know she’s in good hands now and looking over all of us and singing her heart out.❤️
Dear Sondra,
A life is like a song we write
In our own tone and key,
Each life we touch reflects a note
That forms the melody
We choose the theme and chorus
Of the song to bear our name.
And each will have a special sound,
No two can be the same.
So when someone we love departs,
In memory we find
Their song plays on within the hearts
Of those they leave behind.
Your Mom’s song will play on forever in your heart!
With deepest sympathy in your loss.
My prayers are with you and your family.
