Alma Jean Logan Mead was born on June 28, 1933 in Barbourville, Kentucky. She departed on July 5, 2023 in Rockledge, Florida.
Jean was raised by her grandparents and grew up working hard on the farm. After she graduated high school, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she received her degree in nursing at St. Luke’s School of Nursing. It was during her schooling that she met and fell in love with her roommate Molly’s brother, Hansel Byron Mead. They were married in March of 1954. Hansel finished his degree at FSU, and they moved to Falls Church, Virginia. Then in 1960, they came back to Florida and settled in Melbourne.
She was a wonderful wife and mother to her children. They loved her dearly, and her four grandchildren absolutely adored their Mimi. Her husband and family were everything to her, and she always wanted to make sure everyone felt loved and taken care of. Jean enjoyed a large vegetable garden in the backyard, and always had her beautiful rose bushes. She loved to sew, cook, and bring the family together for meals and holidays. Her french toast and pancake breakfasts were legendary, as were her chicken and dumplings and homemade cookies. You never left Mimi & Grandpa’s house hungry! She was an incredible nurse and worked for 25 years at Holmes Regional Medical Center. We are all so lucky to have had her for our Mother and our Mimi. She was such a huge part of all our lives and our family will miss her immensely.
Jean leaves her husband of 69 years, Hansel and her three children Katheena Pifer (Tom), Douglas Mead (Kaori) and Tracy Runyon (Doug). Also, she leaves her four grandchildren Meagan Pifer, Logan Pifer, Sinclair Runyon and Sophie Runyon; a very special niece Jeanne Helton and grand-niece Sarah Ortagus.
She was predeceased by her sister Iree Helton and nephew Steve Helton.
The family would like to thank Evon, Kelly, Donna, Gina, and Dr. Dana, the angels of the Health First Hospice group that took wonderful care of our Mother.
