Philip Francis Stokes, 94, of Palm Bay, Florida passed away after a brief illness on April 4, 2024. He is survived by his sons, Brian (Nancy) and Robert (Holly), grandchildren Kyle Stokes and Kaitlin Stokes and his sisters Celia Cooper and Miriam Whitaker. He is predeceased by his parents, Mary (nee Maloney) and Francis Stokes, and his brother Fr. David Stokes, S.J.
He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School (1947) in Philadelphia, PA. He enlisted in the United States Army Signal Corp during the Koren Conflict, obtaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from Officer Candidate School, earning an honorable discharge.
He graduated from Drexel University (1958) with a degree in electrical engineering.
His first career was as a design engineer working for RCA, Pan American World Airways and Planning Research Corporation.
His second career was as an air conditioning contractor in which he owned his own company for a period of time.
His third career was as an instructor and professor at Brevard Community College now known as Eastern Florida State College where he worked until his retirement in 1999.
Throughout his working career he was involved as a member and officer of various labor unions.
In retirement he volunteered with the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) for several years. He served as the organization’s 1st Vice President of NAMI Florida.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to NAMI or other charities working to help the mentally ill.
A celebration of life will be held on April 20, 2024 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Club House at Glenbrooke Senior Living of Palm Bay, 815 Briar Creek Blvd., NE, Palm Bay, Florida 32905; 321-956-3330. All that knew Phil are invited and welcome to attend.
