I remember babysitting you from time to time. It felt more like hanging out with a little buddy. You’d show me your rock collection or we would read together. Such a smart and sweet boy and you grew into such an incredibly accomplished man. It was my honor to have had you in my life for that moment in time. You inspired this poem I wrote.
Serenity
It was the only picture
on otherwise bare walls —
a simple framed print:
The Serenity Prayer.
He read it every day.
Courage and wisdom —
he could define those without delay.
When chaos becomes the norm,
it feels like a never-ending storm.
Still, I was surprised when he asked me,
“What is serenity?”
Serenity is a state
of calm and peace.
It’s acceptance of what is,
even when life feels like a mess.
Some things, we can’t change —
wisdom teaches us to release the stress.
That little prayer
lingered in the air.
Then he looked at me and said,
“I don’t have serenity.”
This boy, so full
of curiosity.
Asking, “How is it made?
Why does it exist?”
He’d master a subject,
then move to the next on his list.
What horrors did
his young eyes see?
No medal could be
his path to serenity.
I hear that word
and always think of him.
I pray his path was paved
with light, with love, with joy.
He became a great man —
still, I remember that boy.
And in his final hours,
I hope he could finally be
at peace…
and know serenity.
In honor of a life lived with courage,
and a heart that longed for peace.
Rest well, Marcus.
