Joseph Jerome Schmitt, 90, of Palm Bay, Florida passed on April 29, 2024 in Palm Bay. He was born at home on March 26, 1934 in Palm Bay to Louis F. and Barbara M. Schmitt.

A life long resident of Palm Bay, he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where his father helped to build the original church. He attended Melbourne High School graduating in 1953. Hobbies he enjoyed included woodworking (especially scroll saw), gardening and tending to his many fruit trees.

Joseph’s family includes his wife of 69 years Carole G. Schmitt; sons Joseph Jerome Schmitt, Jr. and wife Carmen, Jeffrey Scott Schmitt and wife Linda and James Christopher Schmitt; brother Col. Edward Schmitt; sister Veronica Phelabaum; daughter-in-law Debbie; grandchildren Adrienne, Jana, Nicholas, Kayla and Marya and great grandchildren Brandon, Kylie, Max, Mercer, Emery, Collins, Grayson, Oliver and Meyer.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Frank, Louis, Nicholas, Toni, Leonard, George, William, Rita, Walter, Barbara and Florence.

A man who loved his family, he would say “if I was any better, I would think I died and gone to Heaven”.

Family and friends may visit at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 10:30 am until time of his Funeral Mass at 11:30 am. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to St. Joseph Cemetery, and in the memo section of the check, enter “Building Fund”. These funds will be used for the continued restoration of the original church on Miller Street. Donations can be mailed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5330 Babcock Street, NE, Palm Bay, Florida 32905.

Uncle Jerome loved to tell jokes and could always make us laugh. I'll miss hearing his stories about growing up on the farm. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
